Hey Trudeau! Shut Down the TMX Pipeline! People & Planet Before Pipelines and Profit!

Record setting and deadly heat waves in Canada and around the world and devastating hurricanes in the Caribbean are just two of the signs of ongoing climate chaos facing humanity and the planet. Every day there are more reasons that we must fight back in defense of Mother Earth and more reasons that our fight against the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion (TMX) is not over. We must unite and raise our voices loud and clear: Trudeau, shut down the TMX pipeline now!

For the past two months, oil tankers carrying toxic bitumen (an especially flammable and toxic type of oil) from the TMX pipeline have been leaving from Westridge Terminal in Burnaby, at the average rate of 341,000 barrels per day. This has increased from a record of 93,000 barrels per day in 2018. TMX is a climate disaster already, and the beginning of oil shipments is a ticking time bomb for further climate destruction.

There is now triple the amount of bitumen (incredibly toxic oil) running through crucial salmon and wildlife habitats, as well as precious forest and farmland. The additional volume running through the TMX pipeline increases the risks of catastrophic oil spills and escalates the risk for devastating fires at the Sumas and Burnaby Mountain tank farms, especially when we know how many corners were cut in order to save time and money during construction. On top of this, it will increase the number of oil tankers in Burrard inlet by seven times, causing irreparable harm to the Salish Sea life, including the already endangered southern resident Orcas.

The Trudeau Liberal government bought the existing Trans Mountain pipeline and the expansion project in 2018. At that time, this disastrous project had a price tag of $4.5 billion and a completion date of the end of 2019. The final price tag for TMX, which is being funded by taxpayers in Canada, is more than 500% over-budget at $34 billion.

Despite these horrible financial and environmental costs, the Trudeau Liberal government has continued to support this project, trampling all over Indigenous rights as they gave TMX approval after approval.
